YOU are Light and Joy for Homeless Pets!

Thank you!

Peaceable Kingdom and Lehigh County Humane Society partnered up this holiday season to bring homeless dogs Home for the Holidays!

In all, 45 dogs were fostered, and adopted - finding permanent loving homes by spending time in a comfy setting. Whether adopted by their foster family, or adopted as a result of having time with a foster family, this holiday season was bright for our community.

Will you foster next year? Stay tuned for upcoming events and happenings at the LCHS?

Home for the Holidays Q&A

What is the program?

Apply to foster a dog below. Once you are approved, you will be contacted to schedule a time for you to come and pick up your foster dog. All dogs will be picked up any day before January 5th. This is a rolling event throughout to season!

Am I just giving it a break from the shelter?

Fostering a homeless pet during the holiday season is a unique way to connect with your community and give a pet the chance to spend the holidays in a home, better preparing them for their new adoptive home. Some benefits of fostering a dog:

  • Interact and help build trust in a shelter dog, many of whom have been abandoned or mistreated. Fostering is incredible to help build their self-esteem

  • Learn important things about a shelter dog that will be helpful to potential adopters. This information can help LCHS to facilitate the perfect match for adoption

  • Fostering pets who might not thrive in a shelter setting gives them a chance to wind down in a home setting, and to help bring out their inner personality

  •  Saves lives and provides a change of environment for dogs in a shelter

  • Foster Pets learn they are loved. When a dog that has been in a shelter environment, hurt, abused or neglected, enters your home a magical, beautiful thing happens! While they may not be permanently settled, they surely understand that they are safe and very much loved

  • Foster pets will make you laugh

Gives you the opportunity to show a dog human touch and - love perhaps for the very first time – and to provide an environment for them where they feel safe. You can watch them transform before your very own eyes.

  • You can work with a shelter dog on leash training, house training, and other basic command training that will increase a shelter dog’s chance at finding the perfect human family. It is fun! And…you can help make a dog more “adoptable” by nurturing your foster dog during the holiday season.

Do I keep the pet?

No. “Home for the Holidays” a three-week foster program. Bring a homeless dog into your home, care for them, provide them with love, affection and socialization outside of the shelter kennel.

What if I decide I want to keep it?

If your heart was stolen, you can adopt your foster dog. You must stay in contact with our Adoption Specialist and schedule a time to finalize your adoption.

You’re Covered

 Goodbye is a happy ending

The rewarding feeling you will experience is something very special when your foster time ends. You will feel a sense of pride, knowing what you’ve helped a dog accomplish during his time with you. Certainly some goodbyes can be tough, but knowing that you provided a home and love to a dog for a season makes it all worthwhile.

There is always another lost soul waiting in the wings for a chance to be saved.  That precious life awaits to be afforded your gifts, this is as a good of a feeling as there is.

So, give back, change a life, save a life and foster a dog for this Holiday Season!
