On a frigid December morning, we discovered a small dog tied to a railing, where she was likely abandoned the night before. Mackenzie, as she became known, was in dire need of help.
Her tiny body showed unmistakable signs of a backyard breeding operation. An angry, infected incision stretched across her abdomen, held together by crude sutures and caked with blood and hair. This barbaric surgery led to a severe infection, causing her mammary gland to rupture.
Mackenzie’s belly, riddled with scar tissue, indicated multiple past surgeries. We don’t know how many times this sweet animal endured cruel breeding and surgical operations over the years.
With an adorable underbite, miniature size, and loving personality, Mackenzie instantly became a staff favorite.
Despite the horrific exploitation and cruel procedures she experienced, her loving and joyful personality shone brightly as she recovered over several weeks. We’re thrilled to say that shortly after being made available for adoption, she found her forever home.
No more than two weeks after we met Mackenzie, Eliza came to the shelter as a stray, terrified and lethargic. We didn’t know where she came from or what was wrong, but we knew her time was running out. After rushing her to our Veterinary Clinic, we confirmed she needed emergency surgery for suspected pyometra, an often-fatal infection of the uterus.
What our veterinarian found was even more heartbreaking. A deceased puppy was stuck in Eliza’s birth canal, causing her excruciating pain and preventing her from urinating. Her bladder was swollen, hard, and infected. Without treatment, Eliza would have died. Like Mackenzie, Eliza was bred exploitatively. When she had a birthing complication, she was discarded outdoors instead of given the immediate help she deserved.
Check out our video about exploitative breeding that is happening right here in the Lehigh Valley. It is unfortunately an all too common practice that has resulted in pets being abandoned at their time of need. Support our mailer to make a lasting impact on dogs like Mackenzie and Eliza.
